The structure “如果……(的话),就……”

In Chinese, the structure 如果……(的话),就…… (rúguǒ... dehuà, jiù...) is used to express conditional (“if... then...”) sentences. The clause following 如果 (rúguǒ) presents the condition or hypothesis, while the clause following 就 (jiù) presents the result or action that follows if the condition is met.

Grammar Rules

1. Condition and result: the clause after 如果 sets up the condition (“if...”), and the clause after 就 provides the result or response (“then...”).

2. Role of “的话” (dehuà): 的话 (dehuà) can optionally be added at the end of the condition clause to make the sentence sound more natural and conversational. Omitting it does not change the core meaning.

3. Subject position: the subject of the second clause must always be placed right before 就 (Subject + 就...).

Grammar Structure

如果 + Condition / Hypothesis + (的话), (Subject) + 就 + Result / Action

Important Note

The subject of the second clause (我, 你, 他...) can never be placed after 就. Correct: 我就去 — Incorrect: 就我去 In informal spoken Chinese, 如果 is often dropped, leaving just ……的话,就…… (e.g. 有钱的话,我就去旅游).
