Reduplication of disyllabic verbs: ABAB
In Chinese, two-character (disyllabic) verbs can be reduplicated using the ABAB pattern. This structure indicates that an action is short in duration, represents a casual attempt (“to do something a bit”), or softens the tone of a sentence to make requests and suggestions sound friendly and polite.
Grammar Rules
1. ABAB pattern: the entire two-character verb (AB) is repeated as a unit (AB → ABAB). For example: 休息 (xiūxi) → 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi).
2. Short action and casual tone: it emphasises that the action takes little time or effort and is done casually without pressure.
3. Polite tone: when used in suggestions or requests, it softens the delivery (often combined with the sentence-final particle 吧).
Grammar Structure
Subject + Verb (AB) + Verb (AB) [= ABAB] + (吧)
Examples
他是谁?你介绍我们认识认识吧。
Who is he? Please introduce us so we can get to know each other.
他是新来的,有时间你帮助帮助他吧。
He is new here; if you have time, give him a little help.
这是本新书,你学习学习吧。
This is a new book; take a look and study it a bit.
我真应该多锻炼锻炼了。
I really should get some more exercise.
Important Note
Disyllabic verbs must follow the ABAB pattern (认识认识, 休息休息). Unlike adjectives, they cannot take the AABB pattern — correct: 休息休息, incorrect: 休休息息.
For completed past actions, the particle 了 is inserted in the middle to form AB了AB (e.g. 休息了休息 — rested for a little bit).
