Comparison of “还是” and “或者”

In Chinese, both 还是 (háishì) and 或者 (huòzhě) translate to “or” in English. However, they are used in completely different types of sentences:

还是 (háishì): Used in interrogative sentences (questions offering a choice).

或者 (huòzhě): Used in declarative sentences (statements presenting options or possibilities).

Even if the overall sentence is a statement, if it contains an interrogative clause expressing uncertainty or a choice (e.g., "whether X or Y", "don't know if X or Y"), only 还是 can be used (或者 is incorrect here).
