The structure “先……,再/又……,然后……”

In Chinese, the structure 先……,再/又……,然后…… (xiān..., zài/yòu..., ránhòu...) is used to express the sequential order of a series of actions. It translates to “first..., then..., and then...” in English.

Grammar Rules

1. 先 (xiān): placed before the action that happens first (“first”).

2. 再 (zài): used when the subsequent action has not happened yet (future actions, plans, or instructions). 又 (yòu): used when the subsequent action has already happened (sequential actions in the past).

3. 然后 (ránhòu): a transition word used to connect the next stage (“then / after that”). It is frequently combined as 然后再 (ránhòu zài).

Grammar Structure

Future / planned actions: 先 + Action 1, (再 / 然后) + Action 2
Past / completed actions: 先 + Action 1, 又 + Action 2

Important Note

The key distinction between 再 and 又 lies in the timing: 再 refers to future or incomplete actions, while 又 refers to actions that have already occurred in the past.
