In Chinese, the complex sentence pattern 如果……,就…… (rúguǒ ... jiù ...) is used to express a hypothetical condition and its result. The clause following 如果 (rúguǒ) introduces the condition (hypothesis), while the clause following 就 (jiù) indicates the result or action that takes place if that condition is met. In English, it translates to “if ..., (then) ...”.
Grammar Rules
1. Condition and Result Link: The first clause sets up the hypothetical situation, and the second clause states the outcome.
2. Subject Placement: If the second clause includes a subject, it must be placed before 就 (Subject + 就).
3. Common Variations: In spoken Chinese, 如果 (rúguǒ) can be replaced with 要是 (yàoshi), or paired with 的话 (de huà) at the end of the condition clause (e.g., 如果……的话).
Grammar Structure
如果 + Condition / Hypothesis, (Subject) + 就 + Result / Action
Examples
如果没走错,二十分钟以前就到了。
If I hadn't taken the wrong way, we would have arrived twenty minutes ago.
如果你需要帮忙,就给我打电话。
If you need help, give me a call.
如果有时间,我就去上海玩几天。
If I have time, I will go to Shanghai for a few days to relax.
Important Note
Subject Position before 就: The subject of the second clause must always go before 就. Saying “我就去” is correct, whereas placing the subject after 就 (e.g., “就我就去”) is grammatically incorrect.
Omitting 如果: In casual conversation, 如果 is often dropped, leaving 就 in the second clause to connect the condition and result (e.g., 你有时间,我就去 — If you have time, I'll go).
