Reduplication of measure words (量词重叠)

In Chinese, many single-syllable measure words (量词) can be reduplicated (doubled) to emphasize that every single member within a given scope possesses a certain characteristic. It is equivalent in meaning to 每 (měi — “every / each”). The reduplicated measure word is usually followed by the adverb 都 (dōu). In English, it translates to “every single...”, “each and every...”, or “day after day / year after year”.

Grammar Rules

1. Expressing “Every Single”: Doubling a measure word (e.g., 张张, 个个, 天天) highlights that an attribute applies to all items or time units in a group without exception (identical to the 每……都…… pattern).

2. Paired with “都”: The adverb 都 (dōu — “all / every”) is usually placed after the reduplicated measure word in the predicate.

3. Scope of Usage: Only common, single-syllable measure words and time units can be reduplicated (e.g., 个个, 张张, 件件, 本本, 天天, 年年).

Grammar Structure

Noun / Scope + Measure Word + Measure Word + 都 + Adjective / Verb Time expressions: 天天 / 年年 + (都) + Verb

Important Note

Equivalence breakdown: 张张 (zhāngzhāng) = 每张 (měi zhāng) — every single (photo/sheet) 个个 (gègè) = 每个 (měi ge) — each and every (one/person) 天天 (tiāntiān) = 每天 (měi tiān) — every single day Restriction: Two-syllable measure words (e.g., 公斤 — kilogram, 公里 — kilometer) can never be reduplicated.
