Existential sentences (3): 存现句
In Chinese, existential sentences are used to describe the appearance or disappearance of people or things in a certain place.
Basic Structure
Locative Word/Phrase + Verb + Complement of Direction/Complement of Result + (Aspect Particle) + Numeral-Measure Word Phrase + Person/Thing
Examples
后边走过去两个人
Structure:
后边 + 走 + 过去 + 两个人
Place + Verb + Direction + Numeral-Measure / Person
前面开过来很多车
Structure:
前面 + 开 + 过来 + 很多车
Place + Verb + Direction + Numeral-Measure / Thing
楼上下来了几个人
Structure:
楼上 + 下来 + 了 + 几个人
Place + Directional Verb + 了 + Numeral-Measure / Person
Quick Rule
In sentences of this type:
PLACE FIRST → THEN THE ACTION → PERSON OR THING LAST
For example:
楼上 + 下来 + 了 + 几个人
Several people came down from upstairs.
