In Chinese the “把” (bǎ) construction shows an action carried out on a particular person or thing that produces a definite result.

Basic Structure

Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Complement of Result

That is:

An action is done to something, and its result is named.

Examples

I'll finish this work together with you.

Structure

我跟您一起 + 把 + 这些工作 + 做 + 完 我跟您一起 — I together with you 把这些工作 — this work 做 — to do 完 — to finish / to complete

Here 完 names the result of the action:

to finish doing
()(ma)()()(fu)()(gān)(jìng)(le)
Mum washed the clothes clean.

Structure

妈妈 + 把 + 衣服 + 洗 + 干净 + 了 妈妈 — mum 把衣服 — the clothes 洗 — to wash 干净 — clean 了 — marks that the action is complete

Here:

to wash clean

干净 names the result of the washing.

()(hái)(méi)()()()(běn)(diàn)(nǎo)(jiē)(hǎo)(ne)
He hasn't got the laptop properly connected yet.

Structure

他 + 还没 + 把 + 笔记本电脑 + 接 + 好 + 呢 他 — he 还没 — hasn't yet … 把笔记本电脑 — the laptop 接 — to connect 好 — the result: done properly 呢 — marks that the state still holds

Here:

to get it properly connected
