The preposition “根据”

In Chinese “根据” (gēnjù) points to the basis or the grounds for an action.

In English it usually comes out as:

according to … on the basis of … in line with …

Examples

In recent years the neighbourhood has changed a great deal to suit their needs.

Structure

根据 + 他们的需要 … according to their needs 这几年 — these past few years 小区 — the residential area 根据他们的需要 — according to their needs 有了很多变化 — has seen many changes
根(Gēn)据(jù)要(yāo)求(qiú)，我(wǒ)们(men)必(bì)须(xū)参(cān)加(jiā)明(míng)天(tiān)的(de)会(huì)议(yì)。
As required, we must attend tomorrow's meeting.

Structure

根据 + 要求 as required 根据要求 — according to the requirement 我们 — we 必须 — must 参加明天的会议 — attend tomorrow's meeting
老(Lǎo)师(shī)根(gēn)据(jù)每(měi)个(ge)学(xué)生(sheng)的(de)兴(xìng)趣(qù)，选(xuǎn)择(zé)了(le)不(bù)一(yí)样(yàng)的(de)书(shū)。
The teacher picked different books according to each student's interests.

Structure

根据 + 每个学生的兴趣 according to each student's interests 老师 — the teacher 根据每个学生的兴趣 — according to each student's interests 选择了 — chose 不一样的书 — different books
