Expressing time (1)

This section covers how Chinese states a date and the days of the week.

Chinese normally gives the date and the day in this order:

年 + 月 + 日 / 号 + 星期

In English:

Year + month + day + day of the week

The order

年 → 月 → 日 / 号 → 星期

That is:

年(nián)year
月(yuè)month
日(rì) / 号(hào)day of the month
星(xīng)期(qī)day of the week

Saying a date

1992年(nián)5月(yuè)16日(rì)/号(hào)，星(xīng)期(qī)六(liù)
16 May 1992, Saturday.

Structure

Chinese month names are formed as number + 月.

Chinese days of the week are formed as 星期 + number.

今(Jīn)天(tiān)9月(yuè)8号(hào)。
Today is September 8th.

The rule in short
