Expressing amounts of money

China's currency is called 人民币 (Rénmínbì, RMB).

The units, largest to smallest:

元 → 角 → 分

In speech they are usually said like this:

块 → 毛 → 分

That is:

元 (yuán) = 块 (kuài) 角 (jiǎo) = 毛 (máo) 分 (fēn) = 分 (fēn)

The order

An amount is said in this order:

元 / 块 → 角 / 毛 → 分

In English:

yuan → jiao/mao → fen

The units

元(yuán)yuan — the formal word

块(kuài)yuan — the spoken word

角(jiǎo)1/10 yuan — the formal word

毛(máo)1/10 yuan — the spoken word

分(fēn)1/100 yuan

Examples

1. 0.02 yuan

两(liǎng)分(fēn)

0.02 yuan

两 + 分 two + fen

2. 0.2 yuan

两(liǎng)毛(máo)

0.2 yuan

两 + 毛 two + mao

3. 3 yuan

三(sān)块(kuài)

六块 + 零 + 两分 6 yuan + zero + 2 fen

There is no 角 / 毛 part here, so 零 is used.

6. 202.2 yuan

二(èr)百(bǎi)零(líng)二(èr)块(kuài)两(liǎng)毛(máo)

202.2 yuan

二百零二块 + 两毛 202 yuan + 2 mao
