第 for ordinal numbers

In Chinese, 第 (dì) goes before a cardinal number and makes it ordinal.

In English it gives “first, second, third…”.

The two structures

第 + 数词

Meaning: the …th

第 + 数词 + 量词 +（名词）

Meaning: the …th one / the …th person / the …th thing

第(Dì)一(yī)，第(dì)二(èr)，第(dì)三(sān)

First, second, third

第 + 一 = 第一第 + 二 = 第二第 + 三 = 第三

第(dì)一(yī)first

第(dì)二(èr)second

第(dì)三(sān)third

第(Dì)一(yí)个(ge)，第(dì)二(èr)个(ge)，第(dì)一(yì)本(běn)

The first one, the second one, the first book

第 + 一 + 个 the first one

第 + 二 + 个 the second one

第 + 一 + 本 the first book

Here 个 and 本 are the measure words.

第(Dì)一(yí)个(ge)学(xué)生(sheng)，第(dì)一(yì)本(běn)书(shū)

The first student, the first book

第 + 一 + 个 + 学生 the first student

第 + 一 + 本 + 书 the first book

A plain ordinal:

第 + number

Examples:

第(dì)一(yī)，第(dì)二(èr)，第(dì)三(sān)

第 + number + measure word + noun

Examples:
