bùjǐn… yě / hái / érqiě…

Meaning

也 / 还 / 而且…… means “not only…, but also…”. It says that besides what the first clause states, there is a further fact, quality or action.

B → Not only A, but also B.

1. Same subject

When both clauses share a subject, 不仅 goes AFTER it.

He not only plays football well, but also has a good personality.

Both halves here have 他 as subject, so 不仅 follows it: 他 + 不仅 + A, B + 也……

I not only speak Chinese, I speak English as well.

2. Different subjects

When the two clauses have different subjects, 不仅 goes BEFORE the first one.

不仅 + Subject 1 + A, Subject 2 + 也 / 还 + B

Not only do I speak Chinese — my friend speaks it too.

The two side by side

()()(jǐn)(xué)(Zhōng)(wén)(hái)(xué)(Yīng)()
I study not only Chinese but English too. (Both actions are 我's.)

Not only do I study Chinese — my elder brother does too.

不仅 AFTER the subject不仅 BEFORE the first subject

All three work with 不仅, but the flavour differs.

()()(jǐn)(huì)(Zhōng)(wén)()(huì)(É)()
He knows Chinese and Russian too. (也 — a neutral addition.)
()()(jǐn)(huì)(Zhōng)(wén)(hái)(huì)(É)()
He knows Chinese — and Russian on top of that. (还 presses the addition harder.)
()()(jǐn)(huì)(shuō)(Zhōng)(wén)(ér)(qiě)(shuō)(de)(hěn)(liú)()
He not only speaks Chinese — he speaks it fluently.
Note: here 而且 adds not a second thing but a second DEGREE — “speaks” becomes “speaks fluently”.

When the addition is unexpected

As a child he was often ill, so every day he went running to build himself up.

Nobody expected that, grown up, he would not only be healthy but become a long-distance runner.
This is 还 doing its real work: the second half is more surprising than the first.

When two qualities are added

I'm planning a trip to Yunnan. They say it isn't only beautiful — the people are very warm as well.
而且 can be followed by 也 as well: 而且人也非常热情.
Remember: 不仅 = not only; 也 = also; 还 = in addition; 而且 = moreover. Same subject → 不仅 AFTER it. Different subjects → 不仅 BEFORE the first.
