Similarities

Both 另外 and 另 mean “another” or “other”, and both can be a pronoun or an adverb.

他(Tā)一(yī)边(biān)说(shuō)谢(xiè)谢(xie)，一(yī)边(biān)从(cóng)手(shǒu)里(lǐ)拿(ná)出(chū)另(lìng)外(wài)一(yī)本(běn)书(shū)。

While thanking them, he took out another book.

另一本书 is correct; 另的书 is not — 另 does not take 的.

另 usually goes with monosyllabic verbs; 另外 works with almost any verb.

另(Lìng)外(wài)，还(hái)要(yào)记(jì)得(de)多(duō)喝(hē)水(shuǐ)。
