肯定

Meaning

肯定 has three uses: 1. Adverb — “certainly”, “definitely”. 2. Adjective — “certain”, “definite”. 3. Adjective — “affirmative”, “positive”.

1. 肯定 as an adverb

Subject + 肯定 + Verb / Adjective
您(Nín)放(fàng)心(xīn)，质(zhì)量(liàng)肯(kěn)定(dìng)不(bù)“打(dǎ)折(zhé)”。
Don't worry — the quality certainly won't be “discounted”.
每(Měi)天(tiān)喝(hē)一(yī)点儿(diǎnr)葡(pú)萄(tao)酒(jiǔ)，对(duì)身(shēn)体(tǐ)是(shì)有(yǒu)好(hǎo)处(chu)的(de)。
Drinking a little wine each day is good for you.
但(Dàn)是(shì)不(bù)能(néng)喝(hē)太(tài)多(duō)，喝(hē)太(tài)多(duō)酒(jiǔ)肯(kěn)定(dìng)对(duì)身(shēn)体(tǐ)不(bù)好(hǎo)。
But you mustn't drink too much — that is definitely bad for your health.

2. 肯定 as an adjective (certain)

不(Bù)能(néng)肯(kěn)定(dìng)的(de)事(shì)、没(méi)发(fā)生(shēng)过(guò)的(de)事(shì)，最(zuì)好(hǎo)不(bù)要(yào)说(shuō)。
It's best not to talk about things you're not sure of, or that never happened.

3. 肯定 as an adjective (affirmative)

相(Xiāng)信(xìn)大(dà)部(bù)分(fen)人(rén)的(de)回(huí)答(dá)都(dōu)是(shì)肯(kěn)定(dìng)的(de)。
I believe most people's answer would be yes.

肯定 vs. 一定

你(Nǐ)一(yī)定(dìng)要(yào)来(lái)。
You must come.
他(Tā)肯(kěn)定(dìng)会(huì)来(lái)。
He'll definitely come.
一定 → certainty or obligation. 肯定 → confidence; it can also be an adjective.
